The Parrot Forest Nature Estate in the Volta Region
Parrot Forrest Association has acquired 43 hectares of land in the Tafi traditional area, strategically located on the way to popular tourist locations. We will develope a botanical garden (theme: fruits of the forest) with a restaurant for visitor, and later a hostel or even a proper hotel. The main attraction will be a parrot sanctuary with large outdoor aviaries, where confiscated animals will be taken in, as well as former pets. The advantages of good husbandry in a suitable climate should convince owners of African grey parrots all over the world to give their animals a better life in their home country.
We will plant and protect portial nesting trees for parrots and the sanctuary shall form the basis of a programme to reintroduce grey parrots to the wild.
Years ago, the flat part of the land was mainly used for farming, but most of that has stopped. We will enhance the soil, e.g. by locally producing chare cole. The climate is perfect for huge trees as we find them in African rain forests. The land is situated on the west side of a hill, which can be seen from the mountaintop at Amedjofe. The flat part is suitable for farming, and the hillside offers stunning views of the sunset over Lake Volta.
